Title Short-term observations of daily sub-surface temperatures on the continental shelf in the vicinity of Algoa Bay, along the southeast coast of South Africa at location ABay03 (December 2013 - December 2014)

Abstract Between 2005 and 2014, multiple short-term studies were conducted to determine the circulation patterns across the continental shelf in the vicinity of Algoa Bay, along the southeast coast of South Africa. One mooring (CR01) was deployed of Cape Recife at a depth of 65m, between June 2013 and December 2014. A set of four moorings (ABay01; ABay02; ABay03 and ABay04) were deployed between the mouth of Algoa Bay and the edge of the continental slope, at depths of 75m, 115m, 120m and 160m, between December 2013 and December 2014. A set of three moorings (PA01, PA02 and PA03) were deployed off Port Alfred at depths of 30m, 85m and 165m, between May 2005 and April 2006. The purpose of these moorings were to measure currents and sub-surface temperatures. Here we present processed daily temperature data, throughout the water column (80-115m), from temperature sensors at location ABay03 (34.134°S; 26.433°E) on the shelf in Algoa Bay, between 06 December 2013 and 07 December 2014.
Methods Self-contained temperature sensors (Star-Oddi; Starmon mini underwater temperature sensors) mounted at known distances apart on the mooring, were depth corrected using pressure data from a ADCP, mounted on the mooring and deployed at location ABay03 (34.134°S; 26.433°E), on the continental shelf in the vicinity of Algoa Bay. The instruments measured hourly temperatures throughout the water column (80m - 115m) between 06 December 2013 and 07 December 2014. These hourly values were averaged to daily means. Daily values were only generated for days on which there were 75% or more hourly readings.
