West Coast Cetacean Distribution and Abundance Survey on the Algoa Voyage 266, November 2019

The West Coast Cetacean Distribution and Abundance Survey was conducted on Algoa Voyage 266, from 04 November to 15 November 2019. The cruise operated along the shelf and slope regions of the West Coast of South Africa, spanning from Dassen Island to Groenriviermond. The primary objective was to assess the distribution and abundance of cetaceans, particularly humpback whales, in the study area. This work adhered to internationally accepted protocols and provided practical experience in addressing logistical and technical challenges associated with dedicated cetacean research cruises.

South Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation Basin-wide Array (SAMBA) Monitoring Line cruise on the Algoa Voyage 265, September 2019

The South Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation Basin-wide Array (SAMBA) Monitoring Line in the South-East Atlantic Ocean was conducted on the Algoa Voyage 265 from 30 September 2019 to 16 October 2019. The cruise operated from Slangkop, off Cape Town, westwards to 0° E, in the South Atlantic Ocean along the SAMBA transect. The objectives of the cruise were to recover, service and re-deploy six (6) Pressure Inverted Echosounders (PIES); complete 37 Conductivity, Temperature, Depth (CTD) full depth casts (using the containerised winch) along the SAMBA transect; undertake Chlorophyll and Oxygen sampling at CTD stations and underway along SAMBA transect; collect underway Thermosalinograph (TSG); Surface Photosynthetically Active Radiation (SPAR) and Ship-mounted Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers (S-ADCP) data and provide training to newly employed Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) personnel and interns.

West Coast Whale Cruise - In-depth sampling of humpback whale feeding super-groups on the Algoa Voyage 254, November 2018

The West Coast Whale Cruise was conducted on the Algoa Voyage 254 between 1 and 14 November 2018. The cruise operated between the shelf, slope and offshore regions (<2000m depth) off the west coast of South Africa, between Cape Point (-34.36.111, 18.38064) and Groenriviermond (-30.8277, 17.52061). This cruise was undertaken for data collection as part of a collaborative project led by the Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA) in collaboration with the Whale Unit, Mammal Research Institute of the University of Pretoria, Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF), National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (USA), Aqualie Institute (Brazil) and Oregon State University (USA). The greater programme is titled 'Large whale research - genetic relatedness, stock identification, abundance, feeding and migratory behaviours' and has two components, the east coast and west coast components. This cruise focused on the west coast humpback whales.
