West Coast Cetacean Distribution and Abundance Survey on the Ellen Kuzwayo Voyage 126, October 2014

This West Coast Cetacean Distribution and Abundance Survey was conducted on the Ellen Kuzwayo Voyage 126, from 28 October to 10 November, 2014. The survey was planned for the region between Dassen Island and Groenriviermond up the west coast. The cruise track of the Ellen Kuzwayo is closely linked to that of the Algoa and while the latter was engaged in offshore and onshore parallel tracks up to the 250m isobaths, the former ran a saw tooth grid survey starting inshore Dassen Island (moving progressively northwards) in-between the parallel grids of the Algoa up to the 150m isobaths (unless concentrations of whales were sighted further offshore by the Algoa). Surveys will be conducted at 10 knots unless weather conditions and safety required a reduction in speed. In such cases all the sightings will be recorded as secondary sightings. Sardine, Hake, and Anchovy Recruitment Programme (SHARP) / St. Helena Bay Monitoring Line (SHBML) on the Ellen Kuzwayo Voyage 108, March 2012

This Sardine, Hake, and Anchovy Recruitment Programme (SHARP)/St. Helena Bay Monitoring Line (SHBML) cruise was conducted on the Ellen Kuzwayo Voyage 108 from 19 to 23 March, 2012. SHARP: At the initiation of the original SARP project the operational objective was to investigate variability in the transport of clupeiod eggs and larvae by the Benguela jet current from the south coast spawning grounds to the west coast nursery area as this would impact recruitment, thereby influencing the abundance of pelagic resources. To date 17 years worth of data have been collected on a transect perpendicular to the coast off Slangkop, the SARP line. Many valuable conclusions have been drawn using the information. Though the SARP line has contributed to its initial goal, the wealth of data and knowledge accumulated over the years suggests it is time for a revamp and extension of the SARP line. The ship-based research was conducted as a joint multi-institutional, multidisciplinary effort with scientists, research technicians, interns and students from the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment: Oceans & Coasts Research (DFFE-OCR), Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment: Specialist Monitoring Services (DFFE-SMS), Bayworld Centre for Research and Education (BCRE) and the University of Cape Town (UCT), all collaborating to achieve a variety of research and monitoring project objectives. This Southern Benguela Cruise was conducted in the Southern Benguela Ecoregion on the Algoa Voyage 263, August 2019. This study focuses on providing a better understanding of the benthic invertebrate communities and associated habitats of three priority areas within the southernmost portion of the Southern Benguela Ecoregion. This includes Robben Island, the Table Mountain National Park Marine Protected Area (TMNP MPA) and the newly proposed Seas of Good Hope Ecologically and Biologically Significant Area (EBSA). The South Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation Basin-wide Array (SAMBA) Monitoring Line in the South-East Atlantic Ocean was conducted on the RS Algoa Voyage 253 from 01 October to 18 October 2018. The cruise operated from Slangkop, off Cape Town, westwards to 15° E, in the South Atlantic Ocean along the SAMBA transect. This Integrated Ecosystem Programme: Southern Benguela (IEP:SB) cruise was conducted on the Algoa Voyage 235 from 16 February 2017 to 28 February, 2017. IEP:SB focuses on the biologically productive, cold waters of the Benguela Current Large Marine Ecosystem, which are inherently variable on short time-scales and responsive to changing weather patterms. The research aims to provide relevant, reliable and improved assessment of the ecosystem, in support of its effective management, preservation and conservation, so that South Africans can benefit from a healthy and well-functioning ocean environment. The overarching objective is to enhance understanding in process studies by assessing the importance, timing and magnitude of mechanisms and processes that influence the Southern Benguela ecosystem structure and functioning, including the climate variability.

Integrated Ecosystem Programme: Southern Benguela (IEP:SB) on the Algoa Voyage 218, September 2015

This St Helena Bay Monitoring Line cruise was conducted in September 2015 (now under the Integrated Ecosystem Programme: Southern Benguela). The St Helena Bay Monitoring Line was initiated as a BENEFIT-driven project on "shipboard monitoring" which linked with similar lines run in Namibia and Angola. The aims are to obtain seasonal and interannual information on the hydrology and productivity of the area. Data on harmful algal blooms, low oxygen water and intrusions of Agulhas Bank water along the west coast will also be collected. A long-term, multi-decadel time-series (from 1951 onward) of information already exists for this important region and has continued in the form of the IEP:SB to detect long-term changes in the hydrology and the plankton, which are important for the detection of regime shifts.
