Processed near-surface underway temperature and salinity (TSG) observations from the South African National Antarctic Expedition (SANAE) on the SA Agulhas II Voyage 005, December 2012

Here we present the 10-second resolution processed Thermosalinograph (TSG) data collected between 07 December 2012 and 19 February 2013, during the South African National Antarctic Expedition (SANAE) on the SA Agulhas II Voyage 005. A SeaBird SBE45 Thermosalinograph (TSG) is used to opportunistically collect underway near-surface temperature and conductivity measurements during research and monitoring cruises. Water is continuously pumped to the TSG from an intake located in the hull of the vessel, and the observations are continuously interfaced with navigational information. A temperature sensor close to the intake provides temperature measurements of the incoming water (T1). The temperature of the water inside the conductivity cell (T2) is used to accurately compute salinity (S) from the conductivity measurements (C). St Helena Bay Monitoring Line (SHBML) on the Africana Voyage 189, February 2004

This St Helena Bay Monitoring Line (SHBML) cruise was conducted on the Africana Voyage 189 in February 2004. This is a long-term monitoring line conducted off the coast of Elands/St Helena Bay on the west coast of South Africa. SHBML started in 2000 as a BENEFIT-driven project on "shipboard monitoring" which linked with similar lines run in Namibia and Angola. The aims were to obtain seasonal and interannual information on the hydrology and productivity of the area. It was incorporated under the Integrated Ecosystem Programme: Southern Benguela (IEP:SB) in 2013 consolidating a long-term, multi-decadal time-series (from 1951 onward) of information for this important region and has continued monitoring in the form of the IEP:SB. South Coast Demersal Biomass Survey on the Africana Voyage 093, June 1991

The South Coast Demersal Biomass Survey on the Africana Voyage 093 was conducted from 7 June 1991 to 5 July 1991. Physical-Chemical Oceanography on the Africana Voyage 085, August 1990

The Physical-Chemical Oceanography Cruise was conducted on the Africana Voyage 085 from 16 - 29 August 1990. This cruise was divided into two legs with the first leg focusing on physical oceanography and the latter on chemical oceanography. The main objectives of the cruise were primarily to find and investigate an eddy shed from the Aqulhas Retroflection in the Cape Basin using XBT, CTD, ADC and WP II net stations; to investigate shelf edge jets on the West Coast continental shelf using ADCP and CTD stations; to recover a thermistor chain (32°50'S, 17°15'E) and a current meter array (32°50'S, 16°45'E) off Cape Columbine deployed prior to the cruise from Benguela; to occupy lines of CTD stations to 50 miles offshore of the Orange River mouth (28°35'S) and Roodewal Bay (30°27'S) and to occupy a NIO bottle sampling line from a gemini in the vicinity of Oubeep Reef (29°20'S).

The West Coast Hake Biomass Survey on the Africana Voyage 079 was conducted from 4 to 29 January 1990. Southern Ocean Seasonal Cycle Experiment (SOSCEx) III Winter Cruise on the SA Agulhas II Voyage 016, July 2015

The third Southern Ocean Seasonal Cycle Experiment (SOSCEx) III is a high-resolution full seasonal cycle experiment using integrated observational and modelling platforms. A novel aspect of SOSCEx III is the integrated multi-platform approach, which aims to explore new questions about the climate sensitivity of carbon and ecosystem dynamics in the Southern Ocean and how these processes are parameterized in models. This winter 2015 cruise can be divided into two primary tracks, the GoodHope line, between Cape Town and the ice edge along the Greenwich Meridian, and the South Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation Basin-wide Array (SAMBA) line, between Cape Town and the Greenwich Meridian, at 34.5 degrees South longitude.

Raw CTD data from the Pelagic Biomass Survey on the Africana Voyage 290, October 2016

This is raw Conductivity, Temperature, Depth (CTD) data from the Pelagic Biomass Survey on the Africana Voyage 290 from 25 October - 14 December 2016. The cruise operated from Hondeklip Bay to Port St Johns, South Africa.The principal aim of the Pelagic Biomass Surveys is to obtain estimates of the total biomass of anchovy, sardine and west coast round herring and to obtain data on their population length frequency compositions, for input to the operational management procedure (OMP) for making Total Allowable Catch (TAC) recommendations for the following year. The surveys also obtain information on the environment and food regime impacting anchovy, sardine and west coast round herring around the coast, although recent surveys (~2009 onwards) have included much less environmental sampling than earlier years. Anchovy and Pilchard Spawning Stock Survey on the Africana Voyage 057, November 1987

The main objective of the cruise was to determine acoustically the biomass of the pilchard and anchovy spawning stocks between Hondeklip Bay and the eastern end of the Agulhas Bank. Additionally, the relationship between the distribution of pelagic fish, their eggs and the water temperature was investigated, and chemical samples were taken along lines of stations as part of an ongoing investigation with the supply of nutrients to the Agulhas Bank.

Anchovy Recruitment on the Africana Voyage 047, August 1986

The main objectives of the cruise were a direct assessment of the biomass of adult anchovy and pilchard on the South and East coasts by acoustic survey, supplemented by aerial fish spotting (East Coast only); an acoustic investigation of the distribution and behaviour of other pelagic fish of commercial importance; an investigation of the relationship between anchovy, pilchard and the hydrobiological environment, specifically water temperature and plankton distribution; a determination of the extent to which anchovy recruits penetrated onto the South Coast, as follow-up to recruit surveys on the West Coast in May and June (Voyages 44 and 45) and a study of the broad physical and chemical features of the Agulhas Bank and East Coast continental shelf in winter.

Commissioning of EIVA ScanFish on the Algoa Voyage 298, January 2024

In November 2018, the EIVA ScanFish III undulator and winch system was acquired, equipped with multiple physical and chemical sensors for real-time data collection. Initial commissioning and training trials were conducted aboard Algoa in December 2018 (ALG256). However, due to instrument damage, these trials were not fully completed. After repairs, additional commissioning trials were carried out during Algoa Voyage 298 in January 2024 to ensure full functionality and operational reliability of the system.
