This is processed Shipboard Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (SADCP) data from the IIOE2 cruise on SA Agulhas II Voyage 028 in October, 2017. The International Indian Ocean Expedition 2 is a collaborative regional cruise to build capacity and strength within Africa. The focus will be on developing students in the region in the areas of physical oceanography, chemistry, biological oceanography, benthic biodiversity, marine top predators and marine plastics. This dataset was processed using older standards which may not align with international best practices and the standards currently adhered to by the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE). The Department is re-processing and replacing data to ensure everything has the same format and is of the same quality and datasets will be marked as obsoleted once that is done. Cape Canyon Exploration Cruise: Southern Benguela in the South-East Atlantic Ocean on the Algoa Voyage 236, March 2017

This Cape Canyon Exploration Cruise: Southern Benguela in the South-East Atlantic Ocean was conducted on the Algoa Voyage 236 from the 06 to 30 March, 2017. The overall aim of this Cape Canyon exploration project is to initiate multi-discplinary and integrated benthic ecosystem process studies within DEA:OCR, in collaboration with external experts (South African National Biodiversity Institute, South African Environmental Observations Network, Council for GeoScience and Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University). Objectives include the collection of basic physical, chemical, biological and oceanographic data that will enable the understanding of the environment of the canyon and an assessment of the spatial distibution of benthic species.

Microplankton monitoring along the west coast of South Africa

Microplankton, comprising of both phyto- and zooplankton in the 20-200μm size range, are a diverse and ecologically important group. They form the foundation of the food web, are instrumental in carbon and nutrient cycling, generate at least 50% of global oxygen and facilitate energy flow to higher trophic levels. Although they are found in all oceans globally, their diversity and abundance is varied. Due to their high sensitivity and rapid response to changes in the environment, their biomass and diversity are considered Essential Ocean Variables (EOV's) for routine and sustained long term observations to assess global ocean changes. This dataset forms part of the routine monitoring along the west coast of South Africa - Integrated Ecosystem Programme: Southern Benguela which occurs biannually in February and August. Processed imagery data collected off the western margin's deep-sea environment on Algoa Voyage 246, February 2018

The aim of the Integrated Ecosystem Program (IEP) Benthic Project is to establish a baseline for epi-benthic invertebrate distribution, in order to identify benthic indicators for long-term monitoring within the pre-determined IEP monitoring lines. Ten stations were successfully surveyed, on board the R/V Algoa in February 2018, using a towed under-water benthic camera. The acquired abundance data represents five stations from the Kleinsee transect, four from Namaqua and one from St Helena Bay.

This is processed and corrected Conductivity, Temperature, Depth (CTD) data from the Transkei Shelf Oceanography Cruise on the Algoa 241, 12 July to 11 August, 2017. The area covered includes the Transkei shelf and continental slope (20m to 1000m), of the Eastern Cape, between Cape St Francis and Port Shepstone in the South-West Indian Ocean.Our knowledge of the distribution of offshore benthic biodiversity on the Transkei shelf is very limited. The region between Algoa Bay and Port Edward is not only important for understanding the functioning of existing Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) such as Pondoland, Dwesa-Cwebe, and the Amathole, but is of particular relevance to the new Operation Phakisa proposed MPA network that will potentially include additional MPAs such as the Protea Banks, Amathole Expansion, and the proposed Addo MPA. Dedicated West Coast Cetacean Distribution and Abundance Survey on the Algoa Voyage 188, November 2011

This dedicated West Coast Cetacean Distribution and Abundance Survey was conducted on the Algoa Voyage 188 from 10 to 20 November, 2011.The main objective of this cruise was to develop and test approaches to a dedicated cetacean cruise. This objective, along with the research aims and proposed methodologies are consistent with internationally acceptable protocols. This work provided hands on experience of logistical and technical cetacean specific problems with dedicated cetacean cruises. This cruise was conducted from the Algoa and two smaller boats. This work precluded the long-term monitoring surveys that were conducted annually from 2012.

Seasonal flow cytometry counts of picoplankton from the west coast of South Africa (May 2015 to February 2017)

Little is known about the distribution and abundance of picoplankton in coastal waters off southern Africa. This data set is part of a PhD study in which picoplankton were sampled from two depths at four sampling lines along the west coast of South Africa in May, September and November 2015, February, May, August and November 2016, and February 2017. Cell counts were made using a BD Accuri C6 flow cytometer and a BD LSRII flow cytometer. The data set contains cell counts for Synechococcus, Prochlorococcus and Picoeukaryotes.
