West Coast Hake Biomass on the Africana Voyage 079, January 1990

The West Coast Hake Biomass Survey on the Africana Voyage 079 was conducted from 4 to 29 January 1990. South Coast Hake Biomass Survey on the Africana Voyage 063, May 1988

The objective of the cruise was to survey by means of trawling the abundance of adult and recruiting hake, sole and other trawl target species; to investigate the environment and interrelationships of hake and other demersal species in various depth strata; to study demersal community relationships; to investigate the occurence, distribution and abundance of squid; to investigate the occurence of linefish species in shallow waters; and to study the biology of sharks and skates. Anchovy and Pilchard Spawning Stock Survey on the Africana Voyage 057, November 1987

The main objective of the cruise was to determine acoustically the biomass of the pilchard and anchovy spawning stocks between Hondeklip Bay and the eastern end of the Agulhas Bank. Additionally, the relationship between the distribution of pelagic fish, their eggs and the water temperature was investigated, and chemical samples were taken along lines of stations as part of an ongoing investigation with the supply of nutrients to the Agulhas Bank.

Anchovy Recruitment on the Africana Voyage 047, August 1986

The main objectives of the cruise were a direct assessment of the biomass of adult anchovy and pilchard on the South and East coasts by acoustic survey, supplemented by aerial fish spotting (East Coast only); an acoustic investigation of the distribution and behaviour of other pelagic fish of commercial importance; an investigation of the relationship between anchovy, pilchard and the hydrobiological environment, specifically water temperature and plankton distribution; a determination of the extent to which anchovy recruits penetrated onto the South Coast, as follow-up to recruit surveys on the West Coast in May and June (Voyages 44 and 45) and a study of the broad physical and chemical features of the Agulhas Bank and East Coast continental shelf in winter.

South Coast Inshore Demersal Biomass and Horse Mackerel Acoustic Survey on the Africana Voyage 125, September 1994

The South Coast Inshore Demersal Biomass and Horse Mackerel Acoustic Survey was conducted on the Africana 125 from 21 September to 18 October 1994. The primary objective is to conduct a stratified bottom trawl survey to assess the biomass, abundance and distribution of hake, sole, horse mackerel, squid and other trawl species on the Agulhas Bank up to 200m, but biased in terms of number of stations in depths up to 120m.

The Anchovy Pilchard Recruitment Survey on the Africana Voyage 092 was conducted on the 7 to the 24 May 1991. The main objectives of the cruise were to estimate the abundance and size-structure of anchovy; a description of the distribution and behaviour patterns of anchovy and pilchard of recruits and the oceanographic variables on these; a collection of biological data on pelagic fish species; an examination of the distribution, abundance and production of plankton in relation to the environment and to recruit distribution and condition; an examination of feeding ecology and food selection of pilchard recruits; an investigation of the vertical distribution and behaviour of feeding juvenile hake in relation to their food environment; an examination of the feasibility of mackerel collecting live horse with the midwater trawl, and of keeping them alive on board and the retrieval of a current meter mooring off Hondeklip Bay.

South Coast Demersal Biomass Survey on the Africana Voyage 086, September 1990

South Coast Demersal Biomass Survey was conducted on the Africana Voyage 086 from 07 September - 02 October 1990. The objectives of the cruise were to survey by means of bottom trawling (under 200 m) the abundance and distribution of adult and juvenile hake, sole, squid, horse mackerel and other demersal target species and to make biomass estimates of each; to study the hydrological environment using the CTD and ADCP and to relate this information to the catches of hake , sole, squid, horse mackerel and other trawl species. The investigation included hydrological transects off the Eastern Cape Coast from inside the bay areas outwards to the shelf -break or main Agulhas stream; a pilot survey using a Calvet net to investigate the feasibility of determining sole egg distribution for the egg production technique; data on the eggs and larvae of other species were also collected. West Coast Hake Biomass Survey on the Africana Voyage 054, June 1987

The scientific targets of the trip revolved around the determination of biomass index of both Cape hake species off the South African west coast. The diurnal cycle of Cape hake and their relationship with environmental parameters was also studied. Some hake material were collected in South West African waters. Deep-water trawls were made to delimit the offshore extent of hake distribution and to collect rare specimens of fish for accession to museums. Demersal community interrelationships were studied, as were spatial distribution patterns and spawning fractions of round herring.

The objectives of the cruise were to survey by means of trawling the abundance of adult and recruiting hake; to investigate the the diurnal cycle of hake and other demersal species; to investigate the environment and interrelationships of hake and other demersal species; to establish the offshore limit of hake and monkfish distribution and to collect deep-water specimens of fish and cephalopods; to conduct mouth-opening experiments with transducers on each wing of the net, and to compare the mouth opening and fishing capabilities of V doors and Polyvalent doors; to study community interrelationships and assemblages and to collect data on hake and other species from the International Commission for the South-East Atlantic Fisheries (ICSEAF) Division 1.5, ie: north of the South African border.
